More Than I Can Take
The Black
The Project.
Back in 2014, a chance meeting with Steve Ancliffe, led to him asking if I was doing anything guitar wise. I told him I had written new material and was in the process of looking for a singer. Steve suggested I sent him three tracks to work on. Within a few days he came back with lyrics and vocals parts, so I sent three more, then two more and the album was born.
We met at his studio and began putting arrangements together, at the time we had around twenty songs to demo, eventually choosing to concentrate on thirteen tracks.
Back in my studio I began programming the drums, adding bass and all the guitars for the demo’s. The intricate drum parts were demanding, spending up to two weeks on each track to get the feel and patterns just as we wanted. In the meantime Steve worked on all the vocals and backing vocals at his own studio and every so often we got together to finalise the song arrangements.
We knew that some great players were required for the rhythm section and so I contacted Stu Hamm and Jonathan Mover, who had previously blown me away when I first witnessed them performing alongside Joe Satriani at the Marquee Club in London.
After listening to the MUDHOG demo’s, Jonathan and Stu agreed to work on the album.
Back in L.A. Jonathan replaced the programmed drums with real drums using a Tama maple kit previously belonging to Billy Cobham. Recording was done in a large library hall using twelve mic’s to catch the full performance. Stu replayed the demo bass parts in his studio adding to them greatly with his awesome playing.
When the tracks came back from Stu and Jonathan, (now our ‘kick butt’ rhythm section), the project had grown into a complete different beast and I began re recording all the guitar parts from scratch to sit perfectly with the now thundering rhythm section.
Guitar talk:
Picking one song at a time I’d think about who’d be the best guy to play each guitar part. Let’s say I chose Pete Townshend, I can’t call him and ask him to play, but I do have his Hiwatt and the Gretsch 6120 he used on the ‘Who’s next’ album in my collection and so they were used to record a ‘Townshend feel’ part.
I applied the same principle to other tracks using guitar’s from great players such as Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Martin Barre, Ritchie Blackmore, Steve Marriott., Keith Richards, Robin Trower, and others, using actual guitars and amps they previously owned and that I have now in my collection.
A full ‘real’ Jimi Hendrix stack is featured on many of the songs and other parts were recorded with at least one Marshall stack, sometimes two, flat out in a live room with all guns blazing.
Recording this way I used ‘old school’ techniques, similar to those used on classic recordings by Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Sabbath, Rainbow, Hendrix, and Van Halen allowing capture of that full bodied ‘live’ sound that we had anticipated for MUDHOG.
NO amp modellers or no speaker simulators were used on this album… only genuine vintage equipment.
With the instrumentation all now recorded Steve went back in the studio and re recorded his final vocal parts.
Covid delayed everything for MUDHOG but in 2021 we finally went into ‘KONK’, the Kinks studio in North London UK to mix on the same Neve desk used by Pink Floyd to record “The Wall”.
Matt Jaggar was to be the mix engineer and once completed we approached Barry Grint at Air Studios to master the album.
MUDHOG. The name? where does it come from?
About ten years ago an strange looking animal appeared by my kitchen door. I had no idea as to what it was. It looked like a hairy ball of brown mud. At first I thought it was a wild pig “A Hog”. Once the mud was off him, I realised he was a badger. MUDHOG is in tribute to my mate MUD (who is no longer with us).
I am a huge fan of Hipgnosis the company that created many famous LP covers , including Led Zeppelin , UFO, Pink Floyd, Wishbone Ash, Peter Gabriel and tons more, so I created the Mudhog LP inspired by their creativity. MUDHOG is a project of love. We hope you will enjoy the music…
In the making this album we wanted to create something extra special for you.
The guitars and amplifiers played on MUDHOG came from Armand’s unique collection.
By bringing these pieces back to life, you can hear their unique sounds and qualities.

Lyrics
Drive
CITY STREETS, SHIMMERING
I FEEL THE TOUCH, OF YOUR SKIN
BREATHING OUT AS I’M BREATHING IN
I KNOW A PLACE, WHERE WE CAN GO TO BE ALONE…
DRIVE
SOLO
INTO THE DESERT’S, DUSTY ROADS
NO ONE HERE, YOU AND ME
TASTING THE BREEZE, ACROSS YOUR LIPS
CASCADING HAIR, THROUGH MY FINGERTIPS
I KNOW THE PLACE, WE CAN GO TO BE ALONE…
DRIVE
ACOUSTIC SOLO
DRIVE
More Than I Can Take
MORE THAN I CAN TAKE
CAUGHT UP IN FEELINGS THAT YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE TO KNOWN
INSIDE THIS SACRED PLAYGROUND WORLD, WHERE YOU GO
GETTING SO HARD… NEVER SO LOW
PICKING YOURSELF UP FROM THIS MESS TO WALK ALONE
PAIN CAN’T HIDE THE FEELING
NEVER FELT SO LOW… HUH
THE HUNGER EATS AWAY THE WALLS THAT PRESS YOU DOWN
TIME IS A HEALER THOUGH YOU’RE TETHERED TO THE GROUND
GETTING SO DARK… FEELING SO LOW
TOO SOON TO WALK AWAY TOO LATE TO LET IT GO
OH, PAIN CAN’T HIDE THE FEELINGS
OH… NEVER FELT SO LOW
MORE THAN I CAN TAKE (MORE THAN I CAN TAKE)
X 3
HUH…
MORE THAN I CAN TAKE (MORE THAN I CAN TAKE)
(repeat to end)
Take Me To The Ocean
C’MON CHILD LET’S STEAL AWAY
TAKE ME TO THE OCEAN
WE CAN BE… ALL ALONE
AND LISTEN TO THE WIND CRY
TAKE A CHANCE, DON’T BREAK A HEART
SHOW ME ALL THOSE GOOD THINGS
SHARING LOVE… AIN’T NEVER HARD
TAKE ME TO THE OCEAN
DON’T LOOK FOR A REASON
DON’T WAIT FOR PAIN
AIN’T NO ONE GONNA TO TELL YOU WHEN TO RUN
ALONE AGAIN… ALONE AGAIN
TAKE ME TO THE OCEAN
KEEP MY HEAD ABOVE THE WATER
RESCUE ME FROM DROWNING
HANGING ON FOR DEAR REFUGE
STOP ME GOING UNDER
YOU AND I GOT SOMETHING GOING
BREAK OUT OF THE DARKNESS
SWIM OUR WAY OUT OF THESE BLUES
TAKE ME TO THE OCEAN
CHORUS
TIME AND TIME I’VE GONE MY WAY
FEEL I’M GETTING CLOSER
CATCH THE SMILE IN YOUR EYES
CLOSER TO THE TRUTH
SEARCHING LIKE THERE’S NO TOMORROW
MAYBE THERE’S A WAY OUT
TAKE ME TO THE OCEAN
TAKE ME TO THE OCEAN
CHORUS
The Black
NO WAY TO GET THROUGH
SHOUTING AT THE WORLD
TOMORROWS FALLEN ANGEL
TODAY IS DADDY’S CHOSEN GIRL
THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE
THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE
CAUGHT IN THE HEADLIGHTS
LIFE HESITATES
SEARCHING FOR THE WAY OUT
SWALLOWING THE HATE
THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE
THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE
SO YOU PRETEND THAT NOTHINGS HAPPENED
IT’S JUST THE VOICES IN YOUR HEAD
CRAWL BACK INSIDE UNTIL IT’S OVER
THEN YOU RELEASE THE BLACK AGAIN
THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE
THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE
IT’S SO ENDEMIC… YOU COME UNDONE
TRY TO WASH AWAY THE SCARS LEAVES YOU BLEMISHED
AND THE TEARS YOU HIDE SO NO ONE KNOWS
THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE
THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE
THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE
Nothing To Say
STANDING IN LINE FOR ANOTHER DRAW
LIFE IS A DEALER BUT YOU YOU’VE ALREADY SCORED
THE NIGHT IS A TAKER WHEN THERE’S NOBODY HOME
REMEMBER THE FEELING, WHEN YOU’RE HOME ALL ALONE
NOW I DON’T MIND IF YOU GET YOUR DOUBTS
LOVE IS IN THE BACK SEAT, WHERE YOU’RE GETTING IT OUT
HOW DO YOU FEEL IT WHEN YOU GET SO STONED
LITTLE INNOCENT DON’T WANT TO BE ALONE
HOW DOES IT FEEL THIS TIME
GET IN AND DRAW THAT LINE
YOU SEE, YOU HAVE, YOU TAKE, YOU BLEED
YOU WANT, SOME MORE, YOU STEAL, FROM ME
I DON’T KNOW YOU BABY… I DON’T CARE
TURNING AROUND TO FACE ANOTHER DAY
STAB YOU IN THE BACK WHEN THERE’S NOTHING LEFT TO SAY
EVERYBODY’S PUSHING ROUND AND GETTING’ IN YOUR FACE
ONE MORE TIME, ONE MORE LIFE GETS ERASED
AND HOW DO YOU FEEL THIS TIME
YOU’RE GOING TO DRAW THE LINE
YOU SEE, YOU HAVE, YOU TAKE, YOU BLEED
YOU WANT, SOME MORE, YOU STEAL, FROM ME
AND I DON’T KNOW YOU BABY… I DON’T CARE
SO HOW DOES IT FEEL RIGHT NOW
BURNING FROM INSIDE OUT
YOU SEE, YOU HAVE, YOU TAKE, YOU BLEED
YOU WANT, SOME MORE, YOU STEAL, FROM ME
YOU DREAM, YOU LIE, YOU HATE, YOU BREATHE
YOU CHOKE, YOU DOUBT, YOU TAKE, THE SEED
YOU TAKE, YOU HAVE, YOU WANT, SOME MORE
YOU STEAL IT ALL, BEG ON THE FLOOR
YOUR LIFE, YOU WASTED, IT ALL AWAY
YOUR STILL, YOUR EMPTY… NOTHING TO SAY
100 Miles
CAN I TAKE YOU HOME SHE SAID
ANOTHER LIFE… ANOTHER PLACE TO HIDE
BAD IT BURNS INSIDE
DO YOU NEED IT
SHE SAID
100 MILES
CAN YOU FEEL IT
INSIDE
100 MILES
LET MY DEFENCES DOWN
OPEN TO ATTACK
TRAPPED IN THE RELAX LOUNGE
NO GOING BACK
CHORUS
FALLING DOWN INTO THIS MOMENT
100 MILES
I LET MY MOTOR RUN
WHILE AGAINST THE CLOCK WE TIED
AND NOW THE TIME HAS COME
I CAN’T HIDE
CHORUS
100 MILES…..
Troubled Mind
OPEN UP YOUR EYES AND LET THEM KNOW
IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE THIS RIVER FLOWED
LIFE HAS TAKEN A BITTER TOLL
AND LEFT YOU HIGH AND DRY ON THE SHORE
NOTHING HERE TO SAVE YOU NOW
HEAR ALL THE WORDS THAT YOU’RE SCREAMING OUT
SOMEWHERE BEHIND THOSE SOLEMN EYES
I SEE A SHADE OF YOU SHINING THROUGH
AND I KNOW… IT’S BEEN A LONG, LONG TIME
EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED BEFORE YOUR EYES
I SEE… WHAT YOU SEE RIGHT NOW
UNDERSTAND IT’S JUST A TROUBLED MIND
SO WHAT YOU GOING TO DO NOW THEY STARE AT YOU
AS YOU MAKE YOUR WAY ACROSS THE FLOOR
HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT THEY STOLE IT AWAY
AND STAND THERE WISHING FOR MORE
AND I KNOW… IT’S BEEN A LONG, LONG TIME
CAN’T YOU SEE IT’S JUST A TROUBLED
I KNOW… IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME
EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED BEFORE YOUR EYES
I SEE… THAT IT’S ALRIGHT NOW
UNDERSTAND IT’S JUST A TROUBLED MIND
UNDERSTAND, UNDERSTAND
SEE IT NOW IT’S JUST A TROUBLED MIND
I SEE WHAT YOU SEE RIGHT NOW
UNDERSTAND IT’S JUST A TROUBLED MIND
Addiction
GET STOOD UP IN THE FALLIN RAIN, DID YOU EVER THINK YOU’DE SEE THAT DAY
CAUGHT UP IN THE HEADLIGHTS, ARE SEARCHING FOR THE REASON WHY
TORTURED FROM THE INSIDE, DO YOU CRAVE FOR ANOTHER LIFE
TORN UP IN CONFUSION, NOW YOU’RE DYING JUST TO LET IT GO
ARE YOU SOMEONES SWEET AMUSEMENT AND DO YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO KNOW
SO IS IT ALL FOR A REASON, OR JUST SOME PLACE YOU FIND YOURSELF
WITH THE PROMISE OF ILLUSION, WHEN THERE’S NOTHING ELSE
AND THERE’S PAIN INSIDE… BURNING YOU ALIVE
DOES THE NEEDLE BRING ANOTHER DAY, AND DOES THAT DAY TURN INTO NIGHT
ARE YOU TRYING HARD TO RUN AWAY, YOUR FEET CONCRETE TO THE GROUND
ARE YOU READY FOR ANOTHER FIGHT, YOUR EYES STING BEGGING FOR MORE
DO YOU CLAW YOUR WAY UP THE WALL, OR CRACK YOUR HEAD ON THE FLOOR
AND THE PAIN INSIDE… EATING YOU ALIVE
AND IS THIS ALL THERE IS… IS THIS WHAT YOU’VE BECOME
AND IS THIS THE WAY YOU FIGHT… BY LYING ON THE FLOOR
ADDICTION FEAR OF LIFE
ADDICTION FUELS THE HATE
ADDICTION TAKES YOU AWAY
ARE THE HANDS BEATING ON THE DOOR, TRYING TO BREAK THEIR WAY IN
DOES THE LIGHT FLICKER IN THE CORNER, OR IS IT JUST A TRICK OF THE MIND
DO YOU FEEL THE WIND RUSHING BY, AS THE FISTS BEGIN TO FALL
DO YOU COWER IN THE CORNER, WAITING FOR THE FIRST BLOW
AND THE PAIN YOU HIDE… LOCKS YOU INSIDE
AND IS THIS IS ALL THERE IS… AND THIS IS YOUR LIFE
YOUR SO MESSED UP INSIDE… YOU’DE RATHER DIE THAN LIVE
ADDICTION FILLS YOU HEAD
ADDICTION IS ALL YOU KNOW
ADDICTION TAKES YOU AWAY
ADDICTION TAKES CONTROL
CONTROL… CONTROL… CONTROL…
Just For Today
THERE IS A PLACE INSIDE MY HEART
IT’S A TIME, TO SOMEONE IT BELONGS
IN THESE DAYS I SURVIVE
I WALK A LINE, I WALK A LINE
THERE IS A CALL THAT I CONCEDE
AND A FACE THAT I BELIEVE
WE NEVER TOOK THE TIME
IGNORING THE WARNING SIGNS
JUST FOR TODAY
OUT ON THE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME
IS A WORLD THAT I HAVE SEEN
LEFT A TASTE IN MY MOUTH
AND A HUNGER…
BEHIND THE DOOR INSIDE MY HEAD
LIES A CHILD, LONGING TO BE HEARD
WE NEVER TOOK THE TIME
IGNORING THE WARNING SIGNS
JUST FOR TODAY
DON’T LET IT BE THE SAME
SOLO
JUST FOR TODAY
THERE IS A VOICE IN MY HEAD
SCREAMING TO BE HEARD
NEVER TOOK THE TIME
IGNORING THE WARNING SIGNS
JUST FOR TODAY
SOLO

ON THIS HELL BOUND STEAMING TRAIN
THROUGH THE STATES OF MIND
ARE YOU SUFFERING
WITH DELUDED THOUGHTS

TO TAKE AWAY THE PAIN
THAT’S KILLING YOU
ONCE AGAIN
CHORUS
LIVING WITH YOURSELF
HOLDING ALL THE ANGER YOU HAVE INSIDE
DO YOU SUFFER IN SILENCE
GIVING IT TO ANYONE WHO PAYS THE PRICE
